ECMWF model of 500 mb heights showing a ridge of high pressure (that orange blob) parked in the sweet spot off our coast.
In this next episode of “What crazy metaphor can Scott come up with for our weather this week?” think of the weather in mid-May here in Seattle as akin to being settled in amid a long flight.
It’s been smooth sailing, much like our sunshine and “Goldilocks” temperatures to start last week.
But then a trio of storms moves through, and it’s like there’s suddenly a few bumps. Then a few more.
Some more jostling as you struggle to keep your drink from spilling like your cup has been consumed by an instant tsunami, and then you hear the little “bing bong” chime, the seat-belt light comes on, and the captain says we’ve hit a little rough patch and sit tight for a bit. (Like…many of you might have actually felt if you flew around or through Seattle with our recent stormy days.)
Well, the last of our three storms has moved off to the east, calmer weather has settled in and “bong”, the seat-belt sign is off…
You are now free to move about the cabin. Or to the cabin. Maybe it’s the Three Bears’ cabin. And Goldilocks is there.
I’M PRETTY SURE YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO GET A LITERARY PERMIT TO MIX METAPHORS LIKE THIS?
Uh oh…
Anyway, a big ridge of high pressure is setting up shop out a fair distance off the North Coast, which is actually the PERFECT position if you want nice, comfy weather here.
Our position being east of the ridge will bring a steady diet of northwest winds through the week. Northwest winds are great because they allow just a nice bit of onshore, marine flow to keep our natural air conditioning humming, but not TOO hot and not TOO cold.
A west or southwest flow and we get the thick marine layers that last much of the day with much cooler than average temps. An east/southeast wind and we get sunny but hot.
But northwest wind gives us the juuuuuuust right (again!) forecast for this week, which is for brief periods of morning clouds then partly to mostly sunny with comfortable highs in the 60s, perhaps warming a bit back into the low 70s by the end of the week.
With the heavy rains of the past few days we’ve earned a little bit of guilt-free sunshine for a bit. So go out to the cabin, or the trails. Walk that dog. Jog that path. Paint that landscape.
WOO! SO MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WILL BE SO AWESOME THEN, RIGHT?
Umm…. 😬
WAIT, WHAT?
The first part of the weekend is still looking great — Saturday and Sunday: Looking good. But it IS a three-day weekend and it IS Seattle and…
Some rain is lurking in some of the long range models for Monday. We’ll see; it’s not unanimous by any stretch. Just if you find yourself trapped in my metaphor (the first one), get in that potty break soon before the seat belt sign turns on again. ✈️
